Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. Assist the Pharmacist in Providing Patient Care

  • Receive prescription(s) from patient/patient’s representative. Receive and process refill requests of prescription(s).
  • Assess prescription(s) for completeness, accuracy, product availability, authenticity, and legality.
  • Updates the patient profile as needed, i.e., date of birth, address, phone number, medication history, allergy information and eligibility/payor plan.
  • Process prescription:
    1. Enter prescription information onto patient’s profile.
    2. Select the correct product(s) brand or generic equivalency (consulting established formulary or pharmacist as appropriate.
    3. Measure, count, or calculate dosage forms for dispensing.
    4. Note any product shortages or out-of-stock items.
    5. Package finished dosage forms, i.e., vial or bottle.
    6. Affix prescription label and appropriate auxiliary label(s) to container(s).
    7. Check for accuracy during processing of the prescriptions, match NDC number.
    8. Prepare prescription for final check by pharmacist.
    9. Store final product in appropriate bin or deliver to patient.
  • Customer Service:
    1. Greets all patients in a timely manner.
    2. Treats all patients and fellow employees respectfully.
    3. Answers phone within three rings.  States “Pharmacy, This is(Name), may I help you?”
    4. Remove messages from phone and IVR promptly.
    5. Ensures pharmacist is notified if a patient is picking up a new prescription so patient counseling is provided. Patients picking up refills shall be asked if they need to speak with the pharmacist. Refer all questions about medications to the pharmacist.

2. Maintain Medication and Inventory Control Systems

  • Identify pharmaceuticals and supplies needed and process orders.
  • Receive goods and verify purchase orders against invoices. Check expiration dates.
  • Place pharmaceuticals and supplies in inventory under proper storage.
  • Process and document non-patient-specific distribution of pharmaceuticals, i.e. crash carts and/or floor stock supplies.
  • Remove from inventory expired pharmaceuticals. Remove discontinued, slow-moving or recalled pharmaceuticals from shelves as directed by pharmacist.
  • Perform required inventories and maintain required records, i.e., Cardinal, Bulk Replenishment Programs, TDH, and annual inventory.
  • Communicate with representatives of pharmaceutical and supply vendors.

3. Participate in the Administration and Management of Pharmacy Practice

  • File prescriptions, invoices, logs and other documents as required.
  • Participate in training of new employees.
  • Compliance with rules, regulations, and professional standards that govern pharmacy and participate in the quality improvement activities.
  • Ensure all medications, records and supplies belonging to the pharmacy department are safely secured.
  • Perform routine sanitation and maintenance of the pharmacy. This includes but is not limited to cleaning of counters, shelves, refrigerator, and floors.  Document refrigerator and freezer temperatures daily.
  • Operate computer system to perform job-related activities, i.e. price updates, generate reports and labels, utilization tracking, and inventory control.
  • Perform billing and accounting functions, i.e., payor code reconciliation, census maintenance.
  • Communication:
  • Reports problems and concerns to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Maintains positive, hard-working attitude.
  • Offers suggestions on ways to improve pharmacy operations.
  • Coordinate written and oral communications throughout the practice setting, i.e. refill request and route phone calls.

Clinic Duties:

  • Follows safety policies and procedures.

4. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein as may be assigned or delegated.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

 

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
  2. Pharmacy Technician Certification and documentation of mandated continuing education.
  3. TSBP registration.
